Service Overview

Composite Doors - explained without the sales script.

A composite front door is the most-photographed, most-touched element of your house. It sets the tone for everything inside and quietly does the security work that keeps your insurance valid.

What it is
Composite doors are built from a solid timber core, high-density insulating foam, glass-reinforced plastic skins and a galvanised steel reinforcing frame. The result is a 44mm slab that looks like painted timber but performs like an engineered security product.
Who it's for
Homeowners who want a striking front door without the maintenance cycle of timber, anyone replacing a tired 1990s plastic door that's let the front of the house down, and properties needing Secured by Design accreditation for insurance discounts.
When you need it
Replace when the existing door looks dated against a refurbished elevation, the lock feels insecure, the slab has warped or you've moved in and inherited the previous owner's mistake. A new front door pays for itself in kerb appeal at the next valuation.
Why professional matters
Composite is the only door type that genuinely solves the timber-versus-plastic trade-off: the look and weight of a heritage timber door, with zero rot, zero swelling, no annual paintwork and a 10-year guarantee.
What Happens If You Wait

The real cost of leaving it
another winter.

The wrong front door is more than an aesthetic mistake - it's a recurring tax on your home's value, energy bill and security posture.

First impressions cost real money

Estate agents consistently cite the front door as one of the top three viewing-day factors. A poor door subtracts thousands from offers.

Failed timber rots from the bottom up

Solid timber doors absorb winter moisture, swell, then split. Repair cycles cost £200–£400 every 3–4 years.

Old composite slabs delaminate

Cheap pre-2015 composites used PVC skins that bubble in direct sun. Modern GRP skins eliminate the failure mode.

Security gaps invalidate cover

Insurers increasingly require BS3621 mortice or PAS 24 multi-point as a minimum. A tired door with a basic euro cylinder may not meet your policy wording.

Common Mistakes We Fix
  • Buying online from a screen-print colour mock-up that looks nothing like the door in daylight.
  • Choosing a colour that fights the brick or stone instead of complementing it.
  • Skipping the anti-snap, anti-bump 3-star cylinder upgrade.
  • Ordering without a survey and discovering the brick reveal needs trimming or building out.
How We Work

A five-step process you can
actually plan around.

  1. 01

    Home survey & colour consult

We bring physical colour swatches, glass samples and hardware finishes to your front step. The morning light on your elevation tells us more than any showroom.

  2. 02

    Fixed written quote

You receive: slab, colour, glass design, hardware, threshold, fitting, waste and registration of the 10-year insurance-backed guarantee.

  3. 03

    Manufacture

Bespoke UK manufacture in 3–4 weeks for standard configurations. Premium ranges (Solidor, Door-Stop) typically 4–5 weeks.

  4. 04

    Installation

Most front doors fit in 4–6 hours. The opening is never left exposed - the new door is hung, locked and weather-sealed before we leave the driveway.

  5. 05

    Walkthrough & guarantee

Lock test, key handover, threshold sealed, paperwork registered. We log the colour and glass code in case you ever need a matching back door.

Why It's Worth Doing Right

Specific benefits.
No vague claims.

44mm solid slab

Heavier and stiffer than 28mm plastic doors - closes with the satisfying thud of timber.

Never needs painting

GRP skin holds colour for 15+ years in UK weather without flaking or fading visibly.

Triple-laminated core

Solid timber, dense insulating foam and steel reinforcement combine for a high-security envelope.

A-rated thermal

U-values from 1.0 W/m²K - significantly warmer than equivalent UPVC or timber.

Secured by Design eligible

PAS 24-tested as standard; insurance discounts available on some policies.

Designer-grade aesthetics

Fifty colours, woodgrain or smooth finishes, period or modern furniture, leaded or contemporary glass.

Specification in Detail

The technical detail
most installers skip.

Not every composite door is the same engineering. Skin material, core construction, slab thickness and hardware grade all separate the £900 budget unit from the £2,400 designer install.

Slab construction

We fit 44mm solid-core composites only - never the 28mm budget slabs that bow in heat. Cores are FSC-certified timber with high-density polyurethane insulation and a galvanised steel reinforcing frame between the inner and outer GRP skins.

Brands we install

Solidor for the premium woodgrain heritage range, Door-Stop for fast-turnaround standard composites, Hurst Composite for designer modern profiles. We choose the brand based on your aesthetic brief and budget, not on what we hold in stock.

Hardware and security

Avocet ABS or Yale Platinum 3-star anti-snap cylinders, Yale or Maco multi-point locking with five hook bolts, banham or bespoke designer furniture in chrome, brass, satin or graphite. Smart lock retrofits (Yale Linus, Ultion Nuki) available on request.

Colours and finishes

Fifty stock colours including chartwell green, racing green, anthracite grey, French navy, duck egg, classic black, French gold and brick red. Woodgrain texture as standard, smooth finish as an option. Different inside and outside colours available for no upcharge.

Glass and decorative options

Toughened safety glass as standard, laminated upgrade for ground-floor security, decorative ranges including art deco, Tiffany leaded, abstract modern and traditional Georgian bars. Sandblasted privacy and bevelled clear options available.
