Service Overview

Bifold Doors - explained without the sales script.

A well-fitted bifold transforms a kitchen-diner into something genuinely different. Closed, it's an A-rated thermal envelope. Open, the back wall disappears and the garden becomes another room.

What it is
Bifold doors fold flat in concertina formation, sliding along a top or bottom track to open up wide spans from 1.8m to 6m. We supply and fit thermally-broken aluminium and UPVC bifolds in 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8-panel configurations.
Who it's for
Homeowners extending the kitchen or living room, anyone replacing a tired set of French or patio doors with something more architectural, and self-builders or renovators specifying the back wall of a single-storey extension.
When you need it
Specify at the planning stage of an extension, on full-house renovations, or whenever you're replacing the back wall doors and want the full-width opening you've always wanted. Bifolds are 60–80% of the budget of a structural slider with comparable visual impact.
Why professional matters
A bifold is a load-bearing, weatherproof, security-graded structure spanning 2–6m of your house wall. Specification mistakes are expensive to fix. The frame system, track, threshold and structural opening size need to be designed as one - which is why a proper survey is non-negotiable.
What Happens If You Wait

The real cost of leaving it
another winter.

Bifolds are not a commodity - the cheap end of the market fails predictably and visibly within a few years.

Cheap rollers seize within five years

Sub-£3,000 systems often use stamped-steel rollers that pit and stick. Once they jam, the whole leaf has to come out for replacement.

Thermal break failure

Non-thermally-broken aluminium runs cold and condenses water on the inside of the frame in winter - a permanent dribble onto the threshold.

Threshold misalignment

Bifolds need a level, structural threshold tolerant to 2mm. Get the brickwork wrong and the doors never close cleanly.

Under-specified glass loads

Large bifold panels are heavy - wrong-spec hinges and tracks fail within a year of daily use.

Common Mistakes We Fix
  • Buying the cheapest UPVC bifold for a wide structural opening - sagging is inevitable.
  • Skipping the survey and ordering to brick-opening size - finished bifolds need 10–20mm tolerance per side.
  • Choosing a 4-panel layout where a 3-panel would be more usable day-to-day.
  • Specifying a flush threshold without considering rainwater drainage on exposed elevations.
How We Work

A five-step process you can
actually plan around.

  1. 01

    Survey & configuration

We measure the structural opening, check the threshold level, discuss panel count, opening direction, traffic-door positioning and threshold style.

  2. 02

    Fixed written quote

You receive: profile, finish, glass spec, hardware, threshold, structural lintel allowance, fitting and waste removal - itemised in writing.

  3. 03

    Manufacture

Aluminium bifolds: 5–7 weeks. UPVC bifolds: 4–5 weeks. Premium Origin and Smart Systems: 6–8 weeks.

  4. 04

    Installation

Most 3–5 panel sets fit in a single day. Threshold bedded in, frame plumbed and packed, panels hung, rollers and magnets adjusted, silicone sealed inside and out.

  5. 05

    Sign-off & guarantee

Full cycle test of every panel, threshold drainage verified, glass cleaned, 10-year guarantee registered and walkthrough completed.

Why It's Worth Doing Right

Specific benefits.
No vague claims.

Full-width openings

Open up 2–6 metres of back wall - turn a kitchen-diner into a covered terrace in seconds.

Slim 70mm sightlines

Maximum glass, minimum frame - the view stays the view.

Soft-close magnetic latches

Panels self-align and close softly, even on 6-metre spans.

A-rated thermal performance

Thermally-broken aluminium and triple-glazed sealed units keep U-values down to 1.3 W/m²K.

PAS 24 security

Multi-point shoot bolts, anti-lift tracks and laminated glass options as standard.

Daily-use traffic door

Specify a single leaf as a traffic door so you don't have to open the whole set every time.

Specification in Detail

The technical detail
most installers skip.

Bifold specification is where good extensions are made or lost. Five variables matter: profile system, panel configuration, threshold, glass spec and structural opening tolerance.

Profile systems we install

Origin OB-49 and OB-72 for premium ultra-slim aluminium, Smart Visofold 1000 for the contemporary architectural look, Aluk F82 for high-thermal performance, and Liniar UPVC for budget-conscious installs. We don't fit unbranded Far East imports - the parts supply chain collapses within five years.

Configurations explained

2-panel: opens 1.8m. 3-panel: opens 2.7m with a single traffic door. 4-panel: opens 3.6m with two-and-two split. 5 and 6-panel: open 4.5–5.4m, ideal for orangeries and large extensions. 7 and 8-panel: structural design required, typically commercial or large new-build.

Threshold options

Standard 70mm rebated weather-tight threshold for typical UK weather, low-level 25mm threshold for level-access compliance, fully flush threshold (subject to threshold drainage detail) for premium architectural finish - best paired with an overhang or porch.

Glass and thermal

Standard sealed units are 28mm low-E double-glazed achieving 1.4 W/m²K. Triple-glazed 44mm units achieve 1.0 W/m²K and are recommended for north and east-facing installs. Acoustic-laminated glass available for properties on busier roads.

Residential vs commercial differences

Residential bifolds prioritise aesthetics and ease of operation. Commercial installs (cafe and restaurant fronts) prioritise traffic durability, automatic-close fittings and finger-trap-rated hardware. We fit both - the survey identifies which spec is appropriate.

Common Questions

Aluminium bifolds typically run £1,200–£1,800 per linear metre fitted, including the door, glass, threshold and installation. A 3-metre 3-panel set typically lands at £4,500–£6,500. UPVC is 25–35% less.
